It is with great shock and sadness that the Cornish Rex Cat Society have to inform members of the Cat Fancy of the passing of our Welfare Officer, Chris Pape, who passed quietly to the other side in the early hours of Friday morning. 30.12.2011.

Chris worked tirelessly for the Cornish and Devon Rex cats for many years, breeding and showing under her prefix of Nelshan.

For many years Chris worked hard as a Welfare Officer with the Rex Cat Club and later with the Cornish Rex Cat Society. Always her work was done quietly with the upmost discretion at all times. Her main thought was always for the cats.

I personally will miss my friend and mentor who over the years has taught me so much and with whom I have shared many joys, giggles and sorrows.

Arrangements for her funeral will be posted as soon as they are confirmed.

Chairperson for the Cornish Rex Cat Society

I was devastated to learn that Chris Pape had passed away on 30th December.

Although I was well aware of how ill she was, it was still a shock as I had spoken to her just hours before. She was a truly genuine person and someone I worked with for many years rehoming Rex cats, I will miss her more than I can say.

My heartfelt condolences to her husband John and their family, particularly granddaughter Jess.

I was greatly shocked to hear that Chris has died, especially after seeing her at the Supreme recently.

For as long as I had known Chris, close on 25 years, she had been subject to ill-health but through it all she worked for Rex Rescue until very recently and continued to take great joy in her cats.  Dealing with her ill-health as she had, I suppose we thought she was a bit of an immortal who would always get through each illness that was visited on her.

Chris got her first Devon Rex, Opal, from me all those years ago and decided she wanted to show her.  She became our designated driver from shows despite her rubbish sense of direction.  I remember coming home from Blackpool one year via Leicester - not the most direct route.  All Chris would do was smile gently and manage to get several rowdy women home safely.

We worked at the same hospital for many years, she in theatres where she usually took control of bolshi Consultants in the same way that she dealt with the politics in the cat world - with unfailing good humour.

I will always remember Chris as a gentle woman who cared greatly for her cats and helped people in times of trouble to re-home their cats when necessary in a non-judgemental way that amazed me.

My thoughts are with her husband John, her sons Neil and Sean and her beloved granddaughter Jess.
