Show Managers report

Saturday January 7th 2012 saw the staging of the 37th Championship show of the Shorthaired Cat Society who were once again joined by a variety of breed shows, the Asian Group Cat Society, the renamed Korat & Thai Cat Association, The Rex Cat Association, The Singapura Cat Club and Sphynx Cat Association.

Also, making their debut was The Snowshoe Cat Society. They were particularly delighted to welcome Robert Susnjar and Ines Tomasic (ADRIASNOW) Snowshoe breeders from Croatia and look forward to seeing them again in the future, maybe with some of their cats next time.

Sadly it was the last time all the clubs will be together, as some of the them are off to pastures new in 2013. Good luck to them in their new ventures. Having managed all 18 of The Rex Cat Association shows it will be particularly sad for me not to be involved in the club’s show anymore.

Unfortunately when I had initially completed my judge allocation lists for the schedule the computer gremlins struck and I lost the lot, which was as any show manager will tell you is pretty soul destroying!! Consequently the re allocations had to be done at breakneck speed and a couple of mistakes slipped the net as they do. Once brought to my attention they were put right but I apologise for the initial confusion it caused.

Once again the Christmas post played havoc with some of the entries which were painfully slow coming in this year,  but after a lot of time spent emailing and phoning around ‘persuading’ exhibitors to enter ,we were 10% up on the number of cats we had last year. In the current economic climate that is nothing short of a miracle!!

As usual I became obsessed with the weather forecasts but the weather was kind to us for once and I was delighted that as I approached Stoneleigh to star setting up, it was bathed in sunshine.

Last year was a complete nightmare with one thing and another. The worst of which was that all the rosettes were delivered to the venue the Thursday before the show but turned away by the staff.  Unfortunately they did not think to let me know!!  We could get in touch with the company who make the Shorthair Cat Society rosettes and were able to collect them on the Friday night. Unfortunately we were not able to do the same with the ones for the Joint Foreign shows as the delivery depot dealing with them wasn’t open on Saturday.

After such a disaster I was taking no chances and I am grateful to Jeanette Knapp and Bob Towner for taking delivery of this years stock and for putting my mind at rest by letting me know they had arrived safely on Thursday.

Thanks must go to Doreen Goadby and my assistants Sue Amour and Judith Mercer, who were there to do whatever I asked of them and to Phil Goreham who once again undertook the computing work for the show. His support was as always very much appreciated. He has the patience of saint! He was hospitalised the day before our show so couldn’t be with us on the day but his partner Jenny very kindly drove all the catalogues and judges books etc down form Hull for us for which we are very grateful. Myself and the show team send get well wishes and all hope he is now well on the road to recovery. Thanks to Bob Towner for taking care of the stalls, to Bella Penning for their usual reliable service with a smile, to all our judges, stewards, vets and the legion of table workers who work so hard to keep the results and the Best in show build ups flowing smoothly.

Thanks to all my fellow show managers, judges, exhibitors and visitors who have taken the trouble to email and phone today to say how much they enjoyed the show. All that remains is for me to thank all you wonderful exhibitors for bringing your lovely cats for everyone to admire and to say I hope that you will give us the pleasure of your company next year.

Stay safe and happy until then.

Show Report

Saturday the 7th of January saw several of the first shows of the New Year held at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire.  After a relatively mild but wet Christmas for most of us and the buffeting of the winds in the week preceding the show the day itself was mild with lovely blue sunshine breaking through by mid morning.  These joint shows gave the opportunity for Selkirk Rex’s and several of the breeds within the Foreign section and Household/Pedigree Pets to compete for 2 certificates on the same day, tempting for those looking to save the pennies when considering travelling to shows and other associated costs.  There was a wide and varied selection of stalls with a couple of new faces to the Cat Fancy, and certainly several items to entice those lucky enough to have some cash left over from Christmas and the sales.  The Snowshoe Cat Society made their debut at this years show holding their first Championship level show.  It was encouraging to see entry figures up by 10% this year, despite getting off to a slow start – especially given the pressure on peoples pre and post Christmas budget and on speaking to Lynda Ashmore after the show she told me that the “gate” was also up on the day – considering Stoneleigh Park is quite an ‘out of the way’ place to get to another good indicator for this shows continued success.

Special classes at the Joint Shows included a fun class – judged on temperament & condition by Mrs C Falconer which was won by Rogus Dotty Daydream (33a31sv) – owned & bred by Mrs S Humphries and the Best Decorated Pen class judged by Mrs T Bray and won by Destrier Dodge Viper (83fnw), owned and bred by Miss K Cruse.   Winners of the very well supported Tom Higgins Memorial Classes were: Male -  UK Imperial Grand Premier Rainsong Stevie Gerrard (72 45d), owned by Mrs S Plaw and bred by Ms S Devereux and Female - CH Rumba Magicmoments (27h), owned and bred by Mr S Marriott-Power and Miss V Marriott.  These classes were generously sponsored and judged on the day by Mrs Joyce Higgins in memory of her husband with cash prizes of £25, £15, and £10 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings and a trophy for each of the winners.

In the late afternoon the crowds gathered around the long row of Best In Show pens bedecked in the respective club colours and drapes for the much awaited final judging of the day.

The Short-Haired Cat Society’s Cat Of The Year 2012 judged by Mrs S Heavens was declared as UK & IMP GR CH KARAMUSHI TUTI FRUITY - a tortie point adult female Siamese, age nearly 4½ half years, owned by Mrs E Brock and bred by Mrs K Burton
Short-Haired Cat Society’s Best In Show Non Pedigree – judged by Mrs T Bray was LIQUORISH  - a black & white shorthair male neuter, 2 years old, owned by Miss E Ramsden (incidentally also BIS Non Pedigree for the Joint Shows on the day)
Short-Haired Cat Society’s Best In Show Pedigree Pet – judged by Mrs M Walkden was LAVINIA GARDNER - a blue shaded tabby longhair female neuter, aged just 10 months, owned by Miss K Layflurrie

In the Joint Foreign Shows each Best In Show judging was held separately, with the winners announced as follows:
Asian Group Cat Society – judged by Ms Sarndra Deveraux - IMP GR CH KAGURA GALADRIEL an Asian female ticked tabby, age 7½ years, owned & bred by Messers S Crow & T Goss
Korat & Thai Cat Association – judged by Mrs Marlene Buckeridge - CH JUSARKA YIN YANG – a Korat female age 7 years, owned & bred by Ms J Cherkas, there was also a Special Prize for this BIS winner – a pen & ink drawing of the wining cat by Committee Member Caroline Bartram
Rex Cat Association – judged by Mrs Grace Denny - UK IMP GR CH WYREWOOD CONQUEROR – a Selkirk Rex adult male age 4½ years, owned & bred by Miss C Hazel
Singapura Cat Club – judged by Mrs V Kilby - JAYSHELM TAMARISK an adult female aged just 18 months, owned & bred by Mrs J Pavey
Sphynx Cat Association – judged by Mrs V Anderson-Drew - ADELFSH JOHN LENNON – a male Sphynx kitten aged nearly 8 months, owned by Mrs P Alexander, bred by S Whittle
Snowshoe Cat Society – judged by Mr S Parkin - ADVISH ICE-MAIDEN – a female neuter aged 5½ years, owned by Mrs M Southall & bred by Mr J Clark & Mr L White
Joint Shows – Best In Show Non Pedigree – judged by Mrs C Falconer - LIQOURISH  - a black & white shorthair male neuter, 2 years old, owned by Miss E Ramsden
Joint Shows – Best In Show Pedigree Pet- judged by Mrs AM Heath - GMC SIR JOSHUA PURRKINS – a red curly longhair male neuter aged 4 years, owned by  Miss J Creaton & Miss C Walker

Congratulations to the Show Managers and Club Committees on a busy and successful show, hats off to Lynda Ashmore and her Assistant Show Managers Sue Amor and Judith Mercer on achieving what must be a miracle in logistics and management in putting on these shows.  I would also like to personally thank the Tableworkers for their assistance in the collation of the Best of Variety / Best in Show results at the end of what had been a very busy show day.  Next years date for your diaries is Saturday the 5th January 2013 at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire.
